Kit Kat Caramel

kitkatcaramel.jpgKit Kat is one of my favorite candy bars, right up there with Butterfinger and Baby Ruth. It’s one of those products that is great because it is so simple – just light, crispy wafers covered in milk chocolate. The new (it’s been around for at least a year, I think) Kit Kat Caramel adds a very small amount of caramel at the top of the wafers. It’s such a nominal amount that it doesn’t really add much to the flavor. So why even bother? A Kit Kat bar just doesn’t need it. I’ll stick with the original Kit Kat, sans caramel.

Ruby Tuesday Triple Prime Burger

tripleprime.jpgI had seen the television commercial for months. What could be better than a hamburger made with 100% USDA prime prime tenderloin, prime ribeye and prime sirloin? The Triple Prime Burger looks delicious on TV, but I am pretty disappointed with the real thing. It is much, much smaller than I expected, and the one I was served was slightly overcooked. For a burger made with such fine meat, I thought it would have much more flavor. Better (and less expensive) burgers are easy to find – just go to almost any fast food joint.

Doritos Smokin' Cheddar BBQ Tortilla Chips

doritos-cheddarbbq.jpg
You may have seen these chips, along with another new variety – Wild White Nacho – at your local Quick-E-Mart. They are part of a promotion in which consumers can vote to determine which flavor survives on store shelves and which one gets pulled. I tried both, and Smokin’ Cheddar BBQ is definitely better tasting. I’ve noticed that many of the Doritos varieties kind of have the same flavor. Smoking Cheddar BBQ has a flavor that is unique and really different from the others. They are highly recommended, but you better find a bag soon, just in case they lose the contest.

Skippy Natural Peanut Butter

skippynatural.jpgIn my ongoing quest to find food that is both tasty and at least minimally healthy, I have tried several different types of “natural” peanut butters. Most of them are average at best, and in some cases are barely edible. Skippy Natural peanut butter, however, is delicious. It is so similar to “regular” peanut butter that you may not even tell the difference. And, unlike most natural peanut butters, there is no need to stir it or keep it in the refrigerator so that the oil doesn’t settle at the top. I happen to prefer the Super Chunk variety, but the creamy variety is just as good. Highly recommended for all your peanut butter needs, including as pretzel dip, in a fluffernutter sandwich, or spread on top of saltine crackers.

Diet Coke Plus

dietcokeplus.jpgI am really surprised by new Diet Coke Plus. After the awful Mixed Berry 7UP Plus, I thought that I could never like a soda with added vitamins and minerals. Diet Coke Plus, however, tastes great. In fact, I prefer it to regular Diet Coke. It has almost none of that nasty “diet” aftertaste. And, it has 15% of your recommended daily allowances for Niacin, vitamins B6 and B12, and 10% for zinc and magnesium. I wouldn’t depend on Diet Coke Plus to supply all my necessary vitamins, but it’s nice to know that it has some good stuff in it as well as being tasty.

Tostitos Flour Tortilla Chips

tostitos-flour.jpgI’ve eaten flour tortilla chips at local Mexican restaurants for years and always wondered why I couldn’t by them in the store. Well, now I can. Tostitos Flour Tortilla Chips are not as good as the flour tortilla chips I’ve had in restaurants, however. Compared to the restaurant chips, the Tostitos chips are heavier, darker (overcooked?), and have little flour tortilla flavor. They remind me of Cinnamon Crispas that used to be available at Taco Bell, without the cinnamon and sugar. Maybe another chip brand will get it right, but I don’t think I’ll be buying another bag of Tostitos Flour Tortilla Chips anytime soon.
