Häagen-Daz Five Passion Fruit

hdfive.jpgHäagen-Daz has taken the “less is more” approach with their new line of ice cream. Each variety is made with only five ingredients: milk, cream, sugar, eggs, and a main flavoring. The result is delicious, intense flavor with nothing to get in the way. Lots of other ice creams are made with things like guar gum, carob bean gum, cellulose gum, and carrageenan, which makes me wonder: if these aren’t really needed to make a good ice cream, then why put them in there? One of the flavors in the lineup is Passion Fruit. I typically like my ice cream to have lots of big chucks of chocolate or fudge or caramel or brownies or peanut butter or cookie dough or candy bar or chocolate covered pretzels or ... well, you get the idea. So, I wasn't expecting to enjoy the Passion Fruit ice cream as much as I did. It explodes with tropical fruit flavor so intense that it almost overwhelms the taste buds. You’ll think that you are eating an actual passion fruit, not ice cream. If the incredible flavor wasn't enough, the ice cream also has the smooth, creamy texture that you expect from Häagen-Daz. It is really, really delicious. Häagen-Daz Five comes in six other varieties: Mint, Ginger, Vanilla Bean, Milk Chocolate, Brown Sugar, and Coffee. Each is delicious (yes, I’ve tried them all) and deserves to be in your freezer - but not for long!

Phoood rating: Outstanding!

What a find!! I like NOT eating all the "gum" ingredients in other ice creams. I've already tasted the Mint, Milk Chocolate, and Vanilla Bean...yummy. Each one left a clean, clear, distinct taste in my mouth. I look forward to tasting Ginger, Brown Sugar and will even attempt Coffee -- even though I'm not a coffee lover. After my experience with the first three I trust Haagen-Daz enough that I truly believe I may enjoy the Coffee flavor.

I'm eating this exact ice cream right now! I agree with everything said, and this is probably the creamiest ice cream I have ever eaten. It definitely doesn't taste like sorbet, and has a strong, fresh, fruity flavor.

I really want to try the chocolate and coffee varieties. They were on sale at Safeway for $3 each. Wow, I seriously hope I can stop eating this before I just finish the whole thing! ;)

Also, regarding the use of those other fake ingredients, I can only assume it is cheaper to use those as filler than to use only these 5 high quality ones (just a guess). It certainly isn't for taste, because ice cream does NOT get any better than this!

You should try the Häagen-Daz Reserve series. Their honey reserve flavor is mind blowing.

I'm eating this right now, too. And I'm another that hates eating all of the "gums" in regular ice cream, so this is awesome. I tried the chocolate, and it was good, but I'm sticking with the passion fruit. It is amazing... sweet, tangy, creamy. Yum! I've been eating a pint a week. :)
