Bergers Cookies

bergers.jpgI had never heard of Bergers Cookies until a Phoood reader, Sebastiano, recently sent me an e-mail in which he lavished praise on them. I later found out that the cookies have been produced in Baltimore, Maryland since 1835 and are distributed in the greater Baltimore region. I was able to get my hands on two boxes of the cookies and immediately knew why Sebastiano liked them so much. These cookies are certainly one of the most unique desserts that I’ve ever eaten. Yet, the cookies are incredibly simple: a buttery, soft, vanilla wafer-type cookie drenched in chocolate fudge. In fact, there is so much chocolate on them that it’s hard to tell if it is a cookie topped with chocolate or a glob of chocolate with a cookie hidden inside. This is not a subtle cookie that you would serve at a tea party. They are heavy, dense, and deliciously decadent. Think of it as the Hummer of cookies. Don’t bother trying to eat more than a couple of them at a time, because you’ll likely give yourself a stomach ache. If you don’t live in the Baltimore area, you can still enjoy the cookies by ordering them through the Bergers Cookies web site. They are a delicious piece of American history that I highly recommend you try.

They really do sound like great cookies, but man, $13 for shipping? That's a pinch even for me.

I have to agree with Meno, that is a bit too much to dish out for some cookies. although i can see your point and understand why they would be so high priced. But they are probably cheaper in stores.

Meno and I got our cookies in the mail yesterday (he bought two pounds because it was only a bit more expensive), and we were kind of disappointed. They arrived sort of all chunked together and the fudge didn't seem like it was of the highest quality. They definitely weren't bad, just not as good as I thought they would be (and definitely not worth the money in my opinion).

We would give them a C+/B-.

And Phoood guy, this is like the 5th time we have bought something you have reviewed, lol! I guess we just can't resist after you make everything sound so good!

Berger's cookies are more like little cakes. I mean, gee, they are practically the size of a cupcake! The cookie part is soft. Berger's also makes delicious cakes; they usually sell them as half-cakes. The chocolate frosted one is out of this world. They also come in vanilla frosting and coconut. Unfortunately they don't offer the cakes on line. I've been eating Berger's products
since I was a child, so it's no big deal to me.
