KFC Double Down Sandwich

doubledown.jpgThe new Double Down sandwich from KFC must be the oddest fast food item ever introduced to the public. What mental case came up with the idea to make a sandwich using two chicken fillets as the bun? Maybe it was just a way to get some publicity and bring a few curious eaters like me into KFC to try it. In the middle of the aforementioned chicken fillets are two pieces of bacon, two slices of cheese, and some kind of sauce they call “Colonel’s sauce.” The chicken fillets were juicy and tasty, as you would expect from KFC. And they weren’t thin fillets, either. Each one must have been three-quarters of an inch thick, which means each bite was about an inch and a half of chicken. That’s just too much chicken for my tastes, no matter how good the chicken is. The bacon, cheese, and sauce added some good flavor but also caused my sandwich to be a slippery, gooey mess that was difficult to eat. It’s not something I would recommend that you try to eat while driving, that’s for sure. I’m glad I ate the Double Down but next time I go to KFC, I’ll be getting something else.

What a unique idea! More of what we all really want in a sandwich - MORE MEAT. You couldn't have been more off base with your review, I tried the Original Recipe and the Grilled and would have to say that both were quite tasty, though the Grilled seemed to be a little bit too salty for my taste. Both had nice, plump, juicy chicken fillets and the bacon and sauce added just the right touch. The sauce reminds me of BK's onion ring dipping sauce, not that I ever really cared for the BK sauce, but it seems to work well in this combination. I'll definately buy the Original Recipe Double Down again.

Jim, does this mean that you've never sat down to dinner or been to a cookout and ate more than one chicken breast? EVER? I give your review a thumbs down and this sandwich a thumbs up.

This sandwich is fantastic, amazing, super duper wonderful! The combo meal is a letdown though. KFC has the most terrible combo portions. Just get the sandwich is go home and heat up some canned vegetables or something to go with it.

Yes, Dan, there is such a thing as too much chicken...when you have to unhinge your lower jaw to bite the damn thing. Jim wasn't talking about too much food, per se, but too much of a bite. At least for me it was. The patties are so thick you may as well peel one off and eat it singular. But your experience my differ, who knows.

Bigger problem: the thing is a total rip. $4.99 for something the size of a double cheeseburger? Sure, the pictures are always misleading, but this thing was tiny as hell. The Colonel
"Sauce" (insert your own dirty joke here) was kick ass, but the bacon was hidden toward the middle. No way would I shell out what I could get five BBQ chicken snackers with.
