Cholula Hot Sauce

cholula.jpgI eat a lot of tacos and burritos at home, and the hot sauce that I put on my meal depends on my mood that day. I always keep six or eight types of hot sauce on hand at all times so that I’m always covered. Sometimes, I just want some La Victoria mild red taco sauce. I’ve been eating good ol’ La Vic as long as I can remember and it’s always the safe choice. But when I want something spicier, I usually reach for the Cholula bottle. I’ve been eating Cholula for a long time too, and in recent years have noticed it showing up more on the tables at Mexican food restaurants. So, I guess I’m not the only one that likes it so much. I love its fresh, spicy flavor and it’s not so hot that it burns a hole in my stomach. I’ve noticed that Cholula costs more than lots of other hot sauces, but I still think it’s worth it. I’ve always eaten the Original variety and didn’t even know there were three other varieties – Chipotle, Chili Garlic, and Chili Lime – until I visited the Cholula web site. I’m anxious to try these other varieties but I doubt they will ever take the place of the Cholula I love.

Phoood rating: Outstanding!

This and Franks Red Hot are the only hot sauces that are not sins against mankind.

Tapatio gets the job done too. I love Cholula and Tapatio equally.

I love Cholula, especially the garlic flavor. Tapatio is good but I like Valentina more.

Recently tried Cholula....Loved it! It's my currently favorite. I like tasting something more than Just heat.

Nothing, and I mean nothing beats sambal oelek. It's a plastic bottle with a green top.

Back in '97 I was down in Texas with a friend. I don't even know where we were, some little town far to the south past Austin. My buddy had been drinking all night, and I was up dealing with a shitty girlfriend on the phone, so we were both feeling pretty shitty in the morning. We needed some food before we could get back on the road. We asked at the front desk of the hotel for the best place to get some breakfast. The guy made a quick call and drew us a little map. We ended up at the back side of a bar in an alley. There were a couple of guys sitting around back there who I guess knew we were coming. They took us in to the dirtiest little kitchen I have ever seen and made a huge platter of eggs, fried potatoes, and a couple of thin steaks. We ate sitting at the bar. I guess the guy at the hotel desk was a friend of theirs and said we really looked like we could use some human kindness, and asked them to hook us up. They wouldn't even let us pay for the food. That was the first time I ever had Cholula hot sauce. When we got back to Wisconsin I couldn't find it locally and had to order a case through the mail. It still reminds me of people being decent to each other on shitty mornings.

Love this stuff, first found it at Baja Fresh in the late 90s, now it seems to be everywhere. My girlfriend never eats spicy foods (like she still uses mild sauce at taco bell) but loves it on eggs. Greatest hot sauce ever.

This stuff is good but Tapatio is the best.

Cholula is good but Tapatio is much better. I also keep Pico Pica bottles on hand too.
