Phoood Hall of Fame: In-N-Out Burger Double-Double

double-double.jpgResidents of four western states are extremely fortunate that they can eat at In-N-Out Burger, my favorite fast food restaurant. The highlight of In-N-Out’s sparse menu is the Double-Double, which has two patties, two slices of American cheese, lettuce, tomato, spread (similar to Thousand Island dressing with a mayonnaise base), and fresh or grilled onions (or no onions at all). It’s by far the best fast food burger I’ve eaten, and has had a very special place in my heart since the first time I ate one. The flavor and freshness of In-N-Out's burgers are what makes them so much better than the competition. When I need even more meat and cheese, I order a 4x4 (you guessed it - four patties and four slices of cheese!). In-N-Out will make your burger with as many patties and slices of cheese you want. I’ve been tempted to order a 6x6 or an 8x8, but haven’t … yet. One of my many goals in life is to order a 100x100 someday (see example here). In-N-Out is legendary for their excellent food, clean facilities, and friendly service. If you are one of the unfortunate souls who don’t live in California, Nevada, Arizona, or Utah, what are you waiting for? Get on a plane, train, automobile, motorcycle, bicycle, Segway, skateboard, or pogo stick and get yourself to an In-N-Out. I promise that you will not be disappointed.

Update July 6, 2009: The rumors are true! I confirmed with In-N-Out corporate headquarters that you can no longer order a burger larger than a 4x4. A company representative told me that this policy was implemented so that they could maintain their high quality standards. I wonder if the fear of lawsuits from sleazy lawyers (à la McDonald's) is the real reason for this change in policy.

Yeah, this burger ranks up there at the very top (if not the best). I remember sinking my teeth into one of these when i was about 6, I have not found a better tasting burger anywhere else since then. Price is quite reasonable for a double-double even right now.

I like to get mine with ketchup/mustard instead of the spread though.

I concur, this hamburger is the blue ribbon.
Up till 1987 I was convinced that The Jumbo Jack from Jack in the Box was the most superior burger. Then Jack in the Box dropped secret sauce, for a mayonnaise-onion powder flavor sauce. From that point on, In-n-Out is/was the one and only.

They really don't come much better, and that's before you factor in a combo with a double-double, fries and drink is about 5 bucks. Many times in college I picked up friends (who went to school back east) from the airport and before they even got home to see their families there was a required stop at In-N-Out.

By the way, the word is that they no longer will serve anything larger than a 4x4. I never order anything more than a double-double so I can't confirm this, though.

Ever since i landed in L.A. i survived on a In-n-out supply.
double double extra extra well done spread grilled onions and no tomatoes.

guys its extremely addictive.
and may most certainly boost the obesity rate.

To be quite honest, I think their burgers are a little overrated. I've lived in California all my life and have enjoyed the occasional trip to In-N-Out, but the beef patties they use are pretty small, equivalent to the size of Mcdonald's patties, but the burgers themselves are a little taller because they use a couple of layers of lettuce, and tomatoes. Not to say their burgers aren't tasty, I just don't think they deserve as much praise as they get over here.

If you're a first timer (or have a friend that's an In-N-Out virgin) though, it's an excellent place to eat for lunch or dinner. I personally think their animal style fries are more palatable, but that's just me.

Posted by: Mark at June 8, 2009 5:48 PM

Mark buddy, you are totally wrong. Theres no way you can say that they are overrated when so many people say they are awesome. You seem to forget the world does not revolve around you. Not trying to be mean, but man, when you think the burgers here are overrated, you kinda have to wonder what you've been smoking to come to that conclusion. Have you not seen the big lines at the drive-thru day in and day out? Sorry bud, but you are wrong.

Posted by: Eddie at June 8, 2009 8:09 PM

Eddie, Mark can't be wrong because he is stating his opinion. Stop being pretentious and let him hold his opinion.

Anyways, being a resident of SoCal, these burgers are amazing. The patties are a bit small, but tasty nonetheless.

Posted by: Ian at June 10, 2009 6:14 PM

Ian,

Stating that its overrated is implying that that In N Out isnt what its hyped up to be, even if its an opinion, one can still be wrong even though its an opinion. Like I said, the proof is in the pudding. Just because he finds it overrated, does not make it so.

Mmmm yum yum... I want some now. Their patties used to be bigger but it took too long to cook. After they brought in a specialist that previously did Mc Donald's he had them arrange everything for speed! Everything is in arms length to make a burger and now that the patties are thinner they cook faster. 5 to 10 seconds faster per burger can add up to years of time and money saved for the Company...
Lets say 100 stores x 500 burgers a day x 10 seconds = 5000 seconds or 83 hours a day between 100 stores (1Hr 20 min per store). 30295 Hours a year saved for In & Out. x $10 hourly rate for the workers is almost $303,000 per year saved.

This burger makes McDonalds look like they have half a star burgers! This is the tastiest burger I will ever eat in my life!(Too bad I live in Texas...)

Posted by: Joey at June 18, 2009 7:41 AM

100x100's are no longer offered at In-N-Out's. :( The largest burger that is offered is the 8x8.

Posted by: Noelle at June 23, 2009 10:55 AM

I went here today, and it was to die for! I order mine without sauce, and with lettuce, pickles, and onions only. I love the way the cheese melts over the onion and meat and the rest of the veggies create a nice crisp crunch.

I feel sorry for anyone who does not have access to an In n Out ;_;

Kick's Butt! Double Double...
4 X 4 - 6 X 6 - 8 X 8. Any burger equation points to In-N-Out.
Leave Home @ 10 a.m. Arriving at In-N-Out 10.15.
They have greeted me everyday since 1988. For animals like me, they open the door. Not one time at any location have I heard, "we open at 10.30". The only draw back...I can't get a 4 X 4 at dawn.
Damn Them.

In N Out double double burger... great burger. Not overdone or underdone... not `swamped' with sauces or seasonings.

Posted by: Marc at June 25, 2009 7:12 PM

I don't know why we haven't heard about 'protein animal style'. That is my favorite. Burgers are brushed with mustard then have grilled onions and 'secret sauce' and wrapped in lettuce leaves. Who needs the bread? I'm stuffed with a single.

By far I think the double double is the best burger I have ever had it's just cooked to perfection and no other burger can compare to it ever even my friend from NY loves in n out as much as I do. Matter of fact I want a double double now yumm

Posted by: Panfilo at July 7, 2009 5:39 PM

In-n-Out is an experience in it self. To start, service people never fail to greet the guest. Even more amazing, is that the communication is flawless. Personnel look like clean and top notch, i.e. 'Disney' like.
It's spotless restaurants. It's not some idiot juvenile Saturday morning television commercial. It's not coupons to stimulate bland slumping food sales. It is Bible Verses printed on item wrappers (back side). It is saying 'NO' to a ethnic side menu.
...It is me. Everything I look for. And, more important, I don't look for.
I T I S Q U A L I T Y...

Posted by: Mary-Jo-Leesa at September 19, 2009 3:37 PM

Eddie,

You are a sheep just like all of the other people on this board. IN-N-OUT IS overrated. They are delecious little burgers but they are still just little burgers that taste pretty good. I will give you that they are fresh but the overall value is lacking. Basically they give you the same quality you would find in a hole in the wall joint. It's more personal then Carl's or McDonald's but that's pretty much it. Enjoy the double double all you like but don't criticize people for having an opinion that goes against the majority. That's how prejudice is proliferated.

Posted by: George at September 23, 2009 11:52 AM

In n out is def the best burger place ever!!!! Nothing even comes close to compairing! I recently moved from Cali to Washington and wow! I'm craving an in n out burger and fries so bad! I don't eat fast food usually but I tried carls jr since they charbroil their burgers and they are actually pretty good I won't venture to any other fast food place yuck. Just miss my in n out so bad! My family would like to open a franchise up here in Washington state so we will see what we can do! To everyone who's near an in n out enjoy a double double with no onions for me please!!!! Aww the memories!

I love this site (just discovered it), and I love In-n-Out and appreciated the link to the 100x100 pictures - maybe it was the raw patties in there that convinced them to impose a limit.

In any event, the only thing I'd quibble with about your post is that it turns out that the McDonald's lawsuit was completely 100% justified (incredibly so), and that a lot of what people (including, until recently, myself) thought they knew about the case isn't right. There's a new documentary film coming out about the case (it's called "Hot Coffee" right now), and it's pretty interesting - and convincing.

I LOVE the double double spread only w/extra cheese. That with a chocolate milk shake and their french fries is awesome! We're stationed in Italy and the first place we stop at when visiting family in Cali. is In N Out.

Yes Eddie, we hear you...Now go away. I just moved to Arizona from Michigan, and I was all exited about Sonic Drive in. Now I have seen the light!!
the Double Double reminds me of the burgers my family used to get from roadside diners on our family vacations. They are my all-time fave.
And it's not that you're wrong Eddie, we just don't agree with you...Try to come to peace with that.

Posted by: Bryan at March 7, 2010 12:49 PM

well i agree with the majority of the pleasent people on this page,i love in and out burger, and for the people who dont feel this way... that is just too damn bad. i agree to the fact that the double double could be bigger but, its soo damn satisfying the way it is. alright i gtg peace to all who love this burger like me muwhahahaha!!!!!!

delicious tasty food

Posted by: Karim and Nicole Joliecoeur at May 20, 2011 10:30 PM

in n out what can i say. dam good.. i have ben fortunate enough to try the burgers when they started up in sac. but now when my friends go there now the conversations turn from quality to quantity. in fact the burgers now are by our estimate 1\3 smaller in just about 2 years. so now we have to pay more for a 4x4 or 8x8 to try and fill up. still all n all tasty though. we just dont go as much now.
