First off, I have to say "BOOOO Carl's Jr" for taking away my beloved Teriyaki burger. Lose that nasty Prime Rib burger and bring back a proven favorite!! That said, on to the new fries. They are "Natural Cut," about three eighths by three eighths of an inch thick, with the skin left on. They are "dry fries," not very greasy at all, but still hold salt well. (No having to salt the ketchup) They look and smell very, very good, and you get a lot for your money. One medium order with a combo meal will be more than enough for all but the biggest appetites. They are mixed up in size and levels of "doneness." I liked the ones that were a little smaller and crispier, and the ones with a lot of skin on them. The larger, less done fries lacked a little in flavor to me, but my granddaughter enjoyed them immensely.. I think these puppies would be fantastic with a spicy seasoning, As they are, I still enjoy them a lot more than the old ones.
Phoood rating:
I tried these last summer when they were trying them out and was sorely disappointed. They have skins on but don't have the flavor that warrants the name "natural cut". If they were natural cut, they'd look and taste like In N Out's fries. But then the regular fries came back and everything was fine, but this past Tuesday I went to Carl's on my lunch break and lo and behold these buggers are back and sadly, to stay. I have to say, though I love their crisscut fries, I don't know how often I will return to Carl's Jr if these crappy fries are lurking about. :( sadface.
Posted by: Jill at July 11, 2008 6:36 PMThese taste just like Jack in the Box fries. They're not bad, but if I wanted Jack in the Box fries I'd goto there. Bring back the old fries Carls.
Posted by: Valmak at July 15, 2008 1:31 AMcarl's jrs fries do taste ike jack n the box fries but better. i don't like them tho i liked thr original ones...the original carls jr fries were so much better!
Posted by: Shanee at July 16, 2008 2:15 PMi 100% agree, i say boycott the fries lol. then maybe they will go back the way it was, i mean seriously go to jack in the box if ya want the new carls fries!!!! the old classic carls jr fries were soooooooo much better, now the only place to go is in n out for fries.. =[
Posted by: nicole at July 17, 2008 12:24 AMThese fries are excellent. Way better than the old ones and way better than Jack in the Box fries. I'm glad they changed the fries and I'm glad their here to stay.
Posted by: Eric at July 17, 2008 3:42 PMSeriously, the old fries were great. These new fries taste like Natural butt Fries.
Posted by: Mikey J at July 18, 2008 5:09 PMThe old fries are part of what makes carl's jr...carl's jr. I don't see these fries lasting too long. too many other fast food places have already done this. good try on the taste, but Thumbs down for being un-original
Posted by: al gore at July 22, 2008 12:50 PMNooooo!!! Carl's and Mc's were the only place to get REAL fries, crisp as hell and a crunch to match! Those potato-y Jack's fries drove me outta there, and now Carl's??
Hello, BK.
Posted by: RyanRialto at July 22, 2008 5:56 PMHATE the new "natural cut" fries. Love eating the skins on my potatos, but these new fries suck. They suck so much that the chili and cheese for chili fries cannot disguise how much the fries suck. Even my beloved double western bacon cheeseburger....I cannot bring myself to visit Carls now because of the crappy fries.
Thank God Del Taco still makes good fries. They apparently will now get my exclusive fast food business.
Posted by: ex-Carls visitor at July 23, 2008 3:52 AMThis makes me so angry! Carl's Jr. Had THE BEST FRIES after McDonalds and now a stupid competition between them and yucky Jack in the Box has forced them to make a very stupid decision to switch to these. I'm so disappointed.
Posted by: Raach at July 23, 2008 11:35 PMI'm not a fan of fast food. I WAS, however, a fan of the OLD Carl's Jr. french fries. In fact, Carl's Jr. was THE ONLY fast food location I'd actually eat every now and again. My daughter's LOVED getting a special treat of french fries on special occassions. To my dismay, the last time we stopped in for a bite, their delicious fries had been changed to "natural cut" fries. DISGUSTING!!!! My daughters wouldn't eat them ... I thought they were atrocious ... even my husband (adorer of all things fast food) thought they were sub-par. When we asked the manager what had happened, she literally told us that these fries "stayed warmer longer" and were a better financial decision for the company. We couldn't believe that she confessed that the company wanted fries that would stay under their warmer longer. Oh my ... admitting to the customer that sub-par food that lasts longer under warmers wins out over fresh, quality product. Well, needless to say, we are no longer customer's of that famous star. Bring back the REAL Carl's Jr. french fries, then we'll talk.
Posted by: Amanda at July 24, 2008 10:35 AMnew fries are a huge let down from the old. clever add on the box, but funny comments don't make them taste better. in fact it's high time to bring on a chicken teriyaki & pineapple six dollar burger. why i'm still waiting for that and a prime rib burger snuck out instead, i just don't get it
Posted by: jack at July 25, 2008 9:19 PMseems like coke tried this in 1985, how did that work out? I predict old fries back by 09'
Posted by: homer at July 31, 2008 12:47 PM"Oh my ... admitting to the customer that sub-par food that lasts longer under warmers wins out over fresh, quality product."
Well at least she was honest with you. It wasn't her decision and she may not even agree with it.
Posted by: Rita at August 2, 2008 12:54 PMI recently had the displeasure of trying Carl's new fries. They ruined my meal. Thinking maybe I had just received a bad batch or that my taste may have been off that night, I tried them again from a different location on a different day. Well, at least they were consistent - consistently bad. I may not return to Carl's until this is corrected. If I do I'll make a second stop at McDonalds for fries.
Posted by: Kevin at August 3, 2008 5:25 PMi had just a few hours ago there alright but left a nasty aftertaste.
Posted by: Jeffrey at August 4, 2008 11:55 PMcomplete true on size.
i couldn't even finish them after my burger!
Total disapointment... Carl's just lost a customer. These new fries are disgusting. I demanded my $ back. Won't go back until they go back to the old ones.
Posted by: Burotn Hunt at August 10, 2008 1:40 PMI to will not be returning to cj's until the old fries return. They don't taste nearly as good. and ruined my meal.
Posted by: jamesq at August 10, 2008 7:42 PMcarl's jr is the best fast food restaurant their is and now even better due to the recent change in fries. The old fries were the only flaw and they corrected it god bless carl's jr.
Posted by: joseph tannous at August 19, 2008 5:53 PMMy wife just woke me up from my nap to have lunch, and to my surprise, she had my usual favorite meal from Carl's Jr. A double western with an order of regular fries. As I eat my burger, every thing's cool till I pop one those so called natural cut fries into my mouth! I seriously thought it was a bad batch of fries until my wife told me to look at the box, and then I noticed it said: NEW Natural cut! And it's written boldly as if they're really good! NOT!! Please believe that I will NOT be eating there until they bring my fries back. They don't even taste good with ranch! WTF! I love the old fries with ranch! And yes Carl's fries were right in line with Mc'Donalds. Different, but equally as great. To even have the name Natural, they should taste closer to In & out more than anything. Carl's, you guys have totally let the majority of us down with these crappy new fries that don't go with anything. Bring back the real thing!!!! Because these trash O butt fries are a disappointment to us all. The 2% of us that like them are obviously having taste bud issues or something. Wow...
Posted by: Tora the great at August 21, 2008 2:35 PMThese Natural Fries bite the big one. I can't stand them. This is the SECOND time that Carl's has changed fries and it's always for the worse. Does anyone remember those awesome crinkle cut fries they had from the 80s? I got used to the new fries and grew to like them a lot. In the world where Jack In The Box and Burger King both changed their fries for the worse, Carl's was a nice treat. But I will NOT be eating there again until the old ones are brought back.
Posted by: Tony Rivera at August 24, 2008 1:07 PMThe new carls Jr fries are gross. I ate one and ended up throwing them all away. I only eat at BK now. Carls just lost most of their business with this dumb decision
Posted by: Tyler at August 26, 2008 8:14 AMStill bummed about this. I haven't even ordered them since. And does anyone agree that their Chili is disgusting?
Posted by: Rachel at August 26, 2008 4:57 PMI went to Carl's today and forgot to order criss-cut fries with my combo. I never liked the old fries (too skinny and not much flavor, IMO). These new fries actually have some flavor and taste like potatoes. The container was not well filled, but that is my only complaint. I'll still go back to the criss-cut fries, But they're definitely an improvement.
Posted by: James H at August 29, 2008 7:48 PMCarl's Jr. was the foundation and home to my greatest friendship. Then one night, as usual, we go to get some burgers and fries, only to look into the bag and find some impostor french fries. Now I find myself alone, broke, reverting to drugs and hungry. Are there any Carl's Jr. support groups? I'm feeling pretty vulnerable right now, I don't think I should be left alone.
Posted by: Manganese at August 30, 2008 11:57 AMTHESE FRIES ARE LAME!!!! I DO REMBER THE FRIES FROM THE 80,S THEY WERE THE CRINKLE CUT FRIES AND THEY ROCKED JUST LIKE WHEN KFC HAD BATTER DIP FRIES WOOOOOOOOOWHO!!NOW ITS DOWN TO MC DONALDS AND WENDYS FOR SHE STRING FRIES B.K FRIES SUCKS i HOPE CJRS IS READDING THIS BECUSE THEY ARE LOSEING LONG TIME CUSTOMERS! UNTILL THEY DO STICK
THEY HAPPY STAR WHERE THE SUN DONT SHINE!
Wow, I'm glad I'm not the only one who's disappointed by these new fries. I tried them when they were introduced earlier this year, and thought they lacked flavor. I instantly missed the old shoestring fries.
I will admit that though I've been eating Carl's Jr. food for as long as I can remember (I was born in 1970, yay!), I really have no memory of the older crinkle cut fries. But I have always loved their shoestring fries. I hope they bring them back. Maybe as a third choice.
Posted by: Joseph at September 3, 2008 5:07 PMI will not eat at Carl's Jr. again till they bring back their old fries and it would be really nice if they bring back their original fries from the 80's! Carl's sucks now!
Posted by: GOGO at September 11, 2008 10:23 AMIn my are area of the country, these fries we're introduced July 9, 2008. After 30 years plus of loyal 4 times a week visits, I haven't been back since that date. Little by little, Carl's is chasing away old business. Can't get an Old Time Star. Can't get and Happy Stars. And, they can't get any of my hard earned cash anymore...
Posted by: Harold at September 13, 2008 9:19 PMI think these naturally cut fries are great! Large, meaty, crispy. To me it's a major upgrade to their old fries made from leftover potato flakes; which get stale within minutes. Please keep the new fries!!
Posted by: Joe at September 14, 2008 3:39 PMThe old fries were really good. I was very disappointed to see they changed them. Carl's Jr. and Mcdonalds were the only fast food places left with skinny fries. Jack in the Box also recently changed to these natural cut fries which I don't like at all. Also, what happened to the sourdough cheeseburgers? They were my favorite and I haven't gone to Carl's Jr. that much since they got rid of them. Now the fries...I'll be visiting even less now. Please bring back the old fries and the sourdough burgers!!!
Posted by: Kelli at September 14, 2008 11:38 PMI won't be going back! I was so disappointed to see they changed the fries. Burger king did this years ago and I haven't been back since.
Please, please... change your fries back, Car'ls Jr.!
Posted by: paul at September 18, 2008 11:11 PMNAAASTY!!!
Posted by: Jared at September 22, 2008 1:18 PMI hate these new fries. I used to eat at Carls Jr more often than I care to admit. I have decided not to go back anymore.
Posted by: Former Carls Jr customer at September 27, 2008 6:59 PMPersonally, I dig the new fries... they end up alot crispier...
but since we're booing carl's for shit... remember the Pastrami $6 burger? That bitch was amazing with a slice of cheese... GONE forever... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I say we petition for it back! The teriyaki burger comes back annually
Posted by: Marq at October 4, 2008 9:02 AMI visited a few different locations when the new fries came out, wishing that perhaps one might still be selling the old shoe string fries. But, alas, they were all the nasty new spuds.
I went so far as to call the Customer Service line and complain.
Come on Carls, you had a great thing going with the old fries. Why can we still have them as an option? Natural fries, or Regular fries? Why didnt you use the same spud that was in the old fries, but just with skin?
I still visit Carls a few times a week. But I dont order any fries now with my meal.
I thought about not eating there any more, but I love the super star, so... :)
These new Fries are Terrible!!!!!!!!!
I am boycotting Carls Jr. until they
Bring back the SHOE STRING FRIES!!!!!!
The new fries are terrible, shame on Carls Jr - the old fries were much better.
Posted by: bob at November 23, 2008 6:08 PMI like the fat fries at Fatburger the best. carls jrs fries ???? ha u dont even know...
Posted by: john thomas at December 5, 2008 8:50 AMI vote no on the new "natural cut" fries! They are nasty. I don't know how they manage to be dry and soggy at the same time. Bring back the original fries!
Posted by: Michelle at December 27, 2008 7:01 PMthe new "natural" fries are nASSty! if i am going to have to eat ass I should at least get paid for it!
Posted by: makrokat at January 8, 2009 11:16 AMAs long as they have these new fries, I refuse to eat there. Bring back the old ones and I will go back. Till then, Carls JR won't get my money.
Posted by: Markus at January 26, 2009 2:07 PMThese fries suck.
Posted by: Gabriel at January 29, 2009 2:36 PMEveryone's a liar, these fries are fantastic. I've started frequenting Carl's Jr. just to get these fries. Sooooooooooooooooooooooo good!
Posted by: Andy at March 17, 2009 3:19 PMPosters got it right, they Xerox'd JackinBox, another failmove company that raped their own fries.
Andy is a focus group whore, these fries are atrocious sticks of pus-spewing, blood-gutted hell.
BRING BACK THE CLASSIC SHOESTRING FRIES!!!
AND THE CLASSIC CHICKEN FINGERS!!!
BRING BACK ARBY'S FINGERS!!!
RAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!
McPIZZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
Almost forgot:
BRING BACK THE SIX-DOLLAR SPICY BBQ BURGER!!!
I've stopped ordering the combo because of this. I just get a burger and buy a coke at 7/11 across the street to avoid paying more for not purchasing a combo. These new fries are just too horrible and don't taste good with my burger. Shame on you Carls, for doing this to your customers.
Posted by: No more Combo's at May 4, 2009 2:13 PMi have to agree with everyone on this board..the new fries or not very good..the best and i mean the best fries were the old one..they beat mcdonalds by a mile. I dont understand why carls would change the fries, they were the best i have ever eatin..now i dont buy them, just the burgers..please bring them back!!!!!!!
Posted by: David at May 15, 2009 1:08 PMTried the new natural cut fries when they first came out (twice) and they sucked. I haven't gone back to Carl's since but keep checking their website in hopes this big mistake will be rectified.
Posted by: Tripod at May 23, 2009 9:43 PMThe new fries are LAAAMMMEEEE. I was dreaming of Carl's fries the other day and was SORELY disappointed!! At least they could offer both fries at their restaurants. Why mess with perfection?!
Posted by: Jordan at June 21, 2009 5:13 PMThe new fries are a complete disaster! I too have stopped ordering combos at carl's. Disgusting God damned fries!
Posted by: carl at June 29, 2009 7:14 PMThese fries blow donkey balls.
I no longer order combos either.
Which sadly nets them more moniez.
=(
Posted by: dalton at July 1, 2009 1:13 PMI agree with the majority of the reviews here. The new fries are a major let down. For a while I stopped eating at carl's but now I live in an area where carls and mickey d's are right next to one another so I stop at both and make my own combo. the new shakes are'nt as good as the one's from the eighties either.
Posted by: ed larson at September 23, 2009 2:47 PMI disagree with the majority of people posting comments. I think if you were a lover of Carl's old fries, you may not like the new Natural fries. I, on the other hand, never was a fan of the old fries so I always ordered Criss-cut fries. Well, today I thought I'd try regular fries for a change, not knowing that they'd changed their regular fries. At first glance, it seemed like I did not receive that many fries. Then I noticed the fries were actually long pieces of potato instead of a bunch of little fries stuck into a container so I wasn't getting gyped. Still, I didn't really notice the fries were any different until I tried them. I thought they were really good; a great improvement over their previous fries. They are crispy and not overly greasy or salty. Now I'll be satisfied with ordering a regular combo meal instead of a combo with criss-cut fries substituted. I mainly go to Carl's for their Western Bacon Cheeseburgers, but I liked the fries enough to research when they changed over...how I found this board.
Posted by: D at December 7, 2009 7:34 PMThese new fries suck. Because of these I no longer large-size my combo. They're too big and they taste grainy. Too bad they suck so much that they got rid of their old, delicious fries.
Posted by: Shiggity at January 2, 2010 5:27 PMi actually don't eat at carls jr anymore because these news fries are disgusting compared to the old!
Posted by: matt at January 7, 2010 10:28 PMHate the new fries - rarely go to Carl's anymore - just not always in the mood for zuchini.
Posted by: CurlyGirlCa at January 13, 2010 7:55 AMMakes me shudder to think anyone finds any of these horrid fries coated in "crispy" batter tasty, hell even edible. These highly manufactured fast food nightmares that Carls and Burger King now push as "fries" totally baffles me. They end up tasting like bad onion rings, overcooked...minus the onion. If they would just sell fries and then sell these other things under some other name, I'd be happy. How about they call them something like "Crispy textured potato food sticks" or something?
Posted by: Skorpio at January 22, 2010 1:06 AMOh BTW this is the Ingredient list of these potato food sticks...
Potatoes, Canola Oil and/or Palm Oil, Modified Food Starch, Rice Flour, Dextrin, Salt, Leavening
(Disodium Dihydrogen Pyrophosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate), Dextrose, Xanthan Gum, Vegetable Oil
(Soybean Oil, Hydrogenated Soybean Oil with TBHQ and Citric Acid to protect flavor,
Dimethylpolysiloxane (as an antifoaming agent)).
How yummy!?
Posted by: Skorpio at January 22, 2010 1:16 AMWell , I really hate those "natural cut" fries. So Its been about 2 years without buying any fries from Carls at all. I'm forced to go where there is A Carl's and a Mcdonalds next to each other and buy my hamburger from Carls and then go to Macdonalds to get my fries!!! I dont even get soda from Carsl either. Carl's Jr was perfect but now I barely go there , I rather go to a local restaurant to buy brgers. Why Carls Jr , Why!! Also I heard some really good news from JAck in the box, I think they will be making "Macdonald's Style" fries now. If so, Jack will be my next option , although their burgers are not that good. Boooooo CARLS'S JR. Im that change really pissed me off!!!
Posted by: Yummy burger at April 12, 2010 9:17 PMthe natural cut fries suck compared to your old shoe string french fries, i loved those. These new natural cut fries have a bad after taste.
Posted by: Nick at April 24, 2010 4:11 AMI would have to add that i am highly disappointed by these new fries.. They are Sick..
