McDonald’s has always been one of my favorite places to go for breakfast, because they have so many delicious items on their breakfast menu. The McMuffin and McGriddle are American classics and are hard to beat when you want something that is quick, cheap, and tastes great. New to the breakfast menu is the Southern Style Chicken Biscuit. It’s about as simple as it gets: a piece of chicken between two biscuit halves. The chicken was cooked perfectly and was very moist, but was seasoned very lightly. I expected more flavor, considering it is supposed to be “Southern” style. The biscuit was tasty, but was too dry and fell apart as I ate the sandwich. I think that some other item to compliment both the biscuit and the chicken would have made the sandwich much better (butter? gravy? cheese?). Unfortunately, the Southern Style Chicken Biscuit is just too plain and uninspired for me to recommend it over other items on the McDonald’s menu.
Phoood rating:
I just posted a review on the recent promotion of the Southern-Style options at McDonald's. The chicken wasn't bad, but we still overwhelmingly prefer Chick-Fil-A (and the meat portion was small!).
Posted by: Chad Everett at May 24, 2008 4:52 AMI tried one of these the day they had the "get one free with medium drink" promotion. I agree, it needs SOMETHING to moisten the biscuit. It wasn't bad, but I don't think I would buy it in place of some of their other offerings.
Posted by: butterflyshirls at May 24, 2008 9:42 AMGo to Chick-fil-a if you want a chicken biscuit...or try their chicken minis...YUM!
I also highly recommend CFA's fruit which is strawberries, apples and oranges. You can't beat it!
I had the biscuit in the morning too, but I found that the actual biscuit kept falling apart and made eating the sandwich very annoying.
The chicken itself was good, but not better then Chic-Fil-a good
Posted by: Zack at May 25, 2008 9:34 PMI tried this on Sunday morning. Had a coupon for a free one. I didn't think it was bad but the biscuit did fall apart. It's not something that I would go and order. I'll stick with the delicious McGriddle!
Posted by: Camry at May 27, 2008 2:59 PMI've tried the biscuit twice, hoping for something approximating Chick-fil-A for breakfast. Both times, the chicken patty tasted like it had been infused with pickle juice. Yuk.
Posted by: Transplanted Lawyer at May 28, 2008 11:10 AMI actually like the chicken biscuit quite well however it would be better if they would go with a softer biscuit and add some country gravy to it for crying out loud=)
Posted by: Jonny Blaze at May 30, 2008 3:34 PMi have to admit, the McGriddle is the best
Posted by: Alex McNally at June 4, 2008 6:59 PMI agree that the breakfast version of this sandwich is a little dry, the McDonald's biscuit has never been very moist. The regular lunch/dinner southern style chicken sandwich might be my favorite item on the menu though, and if you've only had the breakfast version, you are missing out. The chicken patty is much larger and the steamed bun makes it fantastic.
Posted by: Eagles409 at June 9, 2008 1:02 PMi work at mcdonalds, one day i decided to switch from my usual mcskillet and try the chicken biscuit (minus the biscuit) i agree that there was indeed a very strong pickle taste. don't get me wrong, i like pickles, but not on chicken, and most certainly not for breakfast...
Posted by: terri at June 10, 2008 5:42 AMI found the Chicken too be too Salty! I think I'll pass on the Chicken breakfasts and also stick to the McGriddles.
Posted by: Rachel at June 24, 2008 2:23 PMLiked the lunch Southern Chicken sandwich, but didn't like it with the biscuit at all. Too bready, dry, not very tasteful. I agree that it needs something.....
Posted by: Denise at June 30, 2008 11:49 AMWhat bothers me about McDonalds (and some other fast food places" is the chicken. Is it a true, real filet of chicken breast, or a well-disguised reconstituted "filet" of chicken parts. Remember their McRib sandwich? What junk! Sold as bar-b-qued pork ribs! Even the colonel had a reconstituted chicken sandwich! Can't trust these "bean-counter" run operations on quality.

Posted by: John Tobin at July 6, 2008 1:11 PMA (breakfast) chicken biscuit is meant to be just the chicken and the biscuit, and if done right it is delicious. I actually like the McDonald's chicken biscuit better than the southern style chicken sandwich. To me, the bun on the sandwich is too greasy. They can't beat Chik-Fil-A in either category.
Posted by: Esteban at July 23, 2008 6:42 PMi've noticed it's a 60/40 chance on the biscuit. sometimes it comes out dry and too crumbly, as manya of the comments here describe, but most the time (at least where i live) it comes out fairly moist and can hold it's own under the chicken and my jaw.
Posted by: Andrew at August 18, 2008 10:01 AMi've never tried either, on account of a chicken breast on bread sounds WAY too bland for me. i'ma stick with my steak bagels and big macs. :)
Posted by: Lorraine at November 15, 2008 8:56 PMits an excellent sandwich. everytime i've had it its been spot on! crispy yet moist chicken. golden brown biscuit with fluffy interior. the combination just goes together so well.
